Charge

Constitution Article Two: Charge

The general objectives of the Montgomery County Federation of Teachers shall be:

Section 1

To bring the teachers of the Montgomery County, Maryland, Public Schools into a relationship of mutual assistance and cooperation.

Section 2

To obtain for them the individual and group rights and privileges to which they are entitled.

Section 3

To raise the standards of the teaching profession and its right to respect in the community by securing the conditions essential to the best professional service.

Section 4

To better equip their students to take their places in the academic, industrial, social, political, and cultural life of the community, the Federation shall:

  1. Promote democracy in the school system and in the faculties of individual schools.
  2. Insist on recognition of the teachers’ right and competence to participate democratically in all decisions which affect them, their students, or their communities.
  3. Resist the encroachment of any bureaucratic practicies which unnecessarily increase the teacher workload and have no benefit for students.
  4. Oppose all tendencies to render the school environment less humane for teachers and/or students for the cause of efficiency or any false economy.
  5. Discourage, and bring to the attention of the community, any policies or educational practices which infringe upon the rights of the teachers, the students, or their parents, or are not responsive to the needs and considered aspirations of the community.

Section 5

To secure the support of the labor movement for policies contributing to good education in Montgomery County, in the State of Maryland, and nationally.

Section 6

The immediate goals of this organization shall be incorporated in the By-Laws of the Federation.
